Clackamas Fire
Clackamas Fire District serves more than a quarter million residents through 24 fire stations in Clackamas County and is the second largest fire protection district in Oregon.
Ahead of next week’s joint disaster-response exercise, Clackamas Fire’s Urban Search and Rescue team spent Friday training alongside aviation crews from Pendleton, the U.S. Air Force Reserve 304th Rescue Squadron, and the Oregon Air National Guard 125th Special Tactics Squadron.
Crews practiced loading personnel and USAR equipment onto two CH-47 Chinook helicopters, including a side-by-side, to prepare for next week’s joint exercise.
The training allowed crews to verify weight and balance, become familiar with the aircraft, practice loading configurations and work through the communication and coordination needed to safely operate together.
Next week’s exercise will simulate a destructive tsunami impacting the Oregon coast and a major structural collapse at Camp Rilea. Clackamas Fire’s USAR team, military aviation crews, the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office, and other partners will work together to search damaged structures, locate and rescue simulated victims, conduct wide-area searches and coordinate the evacuation of victims by helicopter.
Training together before an incident happens helps ensure that when the call comes, crews are ready to work as one team. Dry run complete! More to come on the full training day next week!

18 years ago, I was wondering if a Fire Dept palletized “module” for a dive rescue team would work on a smaller guard helo for transport out of Salem for regional use. It would be followed by ground swift water or dive teams. OR a MCI mass casualty module would work as well.
I remember doing a lot of cross training with the 304th back in the 80’s-90’s when I was with Multnomah County Sheriff SAR Team and they actually still assisted with search and rescue missions here before they had there helicopters taken away cause of budgets.
Should participate in a map and compass reading course also
