Process and Qualifications

Start Your Firefighting Career with Clackamas Fire

To qualify for most career firefighter positions, you must first be certified as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). EMT programs are widely available at community colleges and provide essential training in emergency response and patient care. Once certified, gaining hands-on experience as a volunteer firefighter is a valuable next step. Volunteering with Clackamas Fire offers a firsthand look a firefighting career and, while not mandatory, this experience can help prepare you for a full-time role.

Another important consideration is whether to pursue paramedic certification. This takes, on average, 1–2 years to complete and costs around $11,000. Training is available through community colleges, hospitals, and accredited medical training organizations. Earning this certification can significantly enhance your qualifications and expand your career opportunities within the fire service. As certified paramedics, Clackamas Fire firefighters are able to provide Advanced Life Support (ALS) services to meet community needs.

Qualifications*

High School Diploma, GED, or College Degree (Must provide a copy)
Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record
EMT Basic, Intermediate, or Paramedic license (State or NREMT)

Standard Hiring Process*

Application Review: Initial screening based on minimum qualifications

Panel Interview Process: May include a Spark Hire Interview, live Zoom panel, and/or in-person panel  

Eligibility List: Candidates scoring 75% or higher will be placed on an eligibility register for up to 30 months

Chief Interview & Physical Abilities Test: Eligible candidates will be invited to a Chief’s interview and asked to successfully complete Clackamas Fire’s Physical Ability Test

Post-Testing Requirements: 

Oregon EMT Basic, Intermediate, or Paramedic license (or reciprocity)
Associate degree or higher required for Paramedic certification in Oregon
NFPA 1582 pre-employment physical
Psychological profile evaluation
Background check clearance
Pre-employment drug screening

Recruit Academy Preparation:

Firefighting is a physically demanding profession requiring high levels of cardiopulmonary endurance, muscular strength, and muscular endurance. We encourage candidates to begin physical preparation early. Our Recruit Academy is designed to challenge and support you as you transition into a career firefighter role.
