Becoming a Fire Inspector/Fire Investigator
Fire inspectors play a vital role in protecting both life and property. They inspect buildings before and after their construction, locating hazardous conditions, and conformity to the fire code. During these inspections, inspectors identify any corrective actions necessary and work with building owners or occupants to bring buildings into compliance with applicable codes, standards, laws and regulations.
Public education is a key part of preventing a fire. Clackamas Fire’s inspectors work with the public to educate and raise awareness about fire and life safety in schools, apartments, senior living facilities, and throughout the community. Fire inspectors have many opportunities to participate in public education via station tours, school presentations, community group presentations and safety fairs.
When a fire occurs within the district, the inspectors are called in to determine both the cause and the origin. This can involve examination of the scene, conducting interviews and compiling reports.

Minimum
- Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record
- High school diploma or GED
- ICC Fire Inspector I
- Must obtain ICC Fire Inspector II to advance in the pay scale
Preferred
- Associate degree or above
- Experience and/or training in any type of inspection, investigations, or fire service
- ICC Fire Inspector II
- ICC Fire Plans Examiner
- Active DPSST NFPA Fire Investigator
- Active DPSST NFPA Fire Instructor I, II, III
- Active DPSST NFPA Fire Inspector I, II, III
- Active DPSST NFPA Public Fire and Life Safety Educator I, II, III
- IAAI Certified Fire Investigator
- IAAI Fire Investigator Technician
Testing Requirements
- Successful Completion of Clackamas Fire District #1 Testing Process
- Application process – Government Jobs

- Written Assignment
- Presentation
- Panel Interview
Post-Testing Clearance
- Proof of vaccination, or submission for medical or religious exemption (subject to change based on State requirements)
- Successfully complete pre-employment NFPA 1582 Physical
- Successfully complete psychological profile evaluation
- Successfully pass background check clearance
- Successfully complete pre-employment drug test
